What Can a Cosmetic Dentist Do?

A cosmetic dentist has the same initial training as a general dentist, and both offer general treatments like fillings, regular checkups, and dental crowns. They can repair teeth and fix cavities. They can also whiten your teeth. However, the focus of a general dentist is on routine treatments and preventive care, while cosmetic dentistry also focuses on the appearance of your smile. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry oversees and credentials cosmetic dentists.

If you feel that your smile needs some work, it’s a good idea to learn about the kinds of procedures offered by a cosmetic dentist. We’ve listed some of the cosmetic dentistry options we offer above, but here’s some more information about those and other procedures we can perform in our dental office:

Tooth Reshaping

Tooth reshaping is a quick and painless procedure that helps to enhance your overall dental health and the appearance of a damaged tooth. During this procedure, we remove some of your tooth enamel using a drill or laser to alter the shape, length, or surface of your tooth. This procedure is often performed in conjunction with bonding.

If you need a tooth shaping, we will begin by taking x-rays to determine the health of the tooth and check the location and size of the dental pulp. It is not always possible to perform the tooth shaping when the pulp is too near the surface, or the enamel is overly thin.

If everything checks out, we will mark your tooth with a pen to provide an outline of the area of treatment. We then use a special device to remove some of the tooth enamel to minimize or eliminate imperfections. Polishing and smoothing can also help with reshaping.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a type of cap that is fitted over a damaged or decayed tooth. This helps to restore its strength, size, shape, and appearance. Getting a dental crown can help hold cracked teeth together or prevent a weakened tooth from breaking. Crowns are also helpful for cosmetic reasons when you need to cover a discolored tooth. Materials used in dental crowns include ceramic, resin, porcelain or composite material, and metal.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is useful for repairing chipped, cracked, decayed, or misshapen teeth. It can also be used as an alternate type of silver or amalgam filling. In this procedure, we use a resin that is colored like your natural tooth. It is pliable, allowing us to attach it to your tooth, after which it will harden and bond to your tooth. Finally, we will shape, trim, and polish it.

The benefits of cosmetic dental procedures are that they can make your teeth not only look a lot better but, in many cases, can help strengthen and protect teeth from further damage. The result is a brighter smile and better oral health. Contact us today for more information about everything from teeth whitening to dental bridges, veneers, implants and more.
